About the Artist

Ms. Zakala throwing

After studying graphic design at the University of Michigan I learned pottery- making from the late Nancy Fox. At the time, she taught at Montcalm Community College in rural mid- Michigan.

My work advanced to the professional level in 1978, and in the subsequent years I have taken my work to shows and exhibits throughout the country, earning numerous awards and recognition.

The many years I spent as a practicing artist led me to a second, concurrent career as an art teacher for middle school children.  I completed requirements for a BS in Ed degree from Central Michigan University, and have been teaching Art in the public schools for the last five years.

I started my studio, Zakala Pottery, in 1978 and currently exhibit in several galleries and art shows throughout Michigan.

I have always been a resident of Michigan, and have been profoundly affected by the beauty of our lakes, woods, and natural areas.  These have been the influences that inspire the rich blue and sand colors of the glazes on my pottery.

The movement of the waves washing the beaches of the Great Lakes, the summer sky over the water, and the deep blues of the night skies can be seen in the glossy surfaces of the bowls, vases, pitchers, and teapots that I make.

My work combines the beauty of lead-free glazing with the durability of stoneware clay.  I create each piece myself using a potter's wheel.  I throw, trim, and fire this pottery by hand. This traditional method of pottery making assures that each piece is an individual work of art.

Besides being beautiful, this pottery is also usable.  It is safe for dishwasher, oven, and microwave.
